french dressing

fashion models are skinny. this should not come as news to anybody. the controversy surrounding the often state of emaciation of models, though, is enough to really piss some people off, as well as baffle the minds of many who do not understand the physical demands of modeling. the runways, still this season were packed with the androgynous, lithe-limbed girls we are all so accustomed to seeing. most of the models i came across during fashion week were european and averaged the age of 16. almost all of them seemed naturally reed thin, still having not grown into their skyscraping frames. straight limbed, flat chested with not a hip in sight, these girls have redefined all that is feminine with something in stark opposition to womanhood. being the fashion enthusiast that i am, i understand the phenomenon of seeing a 6-foot, size zero model act as a walking clothes hanger for the designer's confectionary creations. the clothes hang perfectly, and the bleakness of a model really focuses the attention on the design itself.
but at the paris shows, marc jacobs shook things up with the fall 2010 louis vuitton pret-a-porter collection. lots of blazers, lots of tweed, lots of below the knee skirts, and dare i say it, lots of cleavage. showing his designs on a dynamic lineup including adriana lima, karolina kurkova, and elle macpherson, the show had a classic feminine twist and was reminiscent of the 80s and 90s supermodels. to call these models anything more than thin would be crazy, as every model in this particular show was very svelte. but they walked the runway with more than a contempt stomp: they walked with life. could this be the beginning of a return to the ultra femme beauty which turned heads a few decades back?
